1414865 Tunnelling machines GEWERKSCHAFT EISENHUTTE WESTFALIA 9 March 1973 [10 March 1972] 11421/73 Heading E1F One or more breast structures 21 is or are so supported by resilient material 20 on the cutter bits-carrying frame of a cutter head 5, 15, 7, 14 rotatably mounted in the shield 1 of a tunnelling machine that the cutter bits project beyond the or each breast structure when the structure is urged against a tunnel face as the resilent material is compressed. Preferably the or each breast plate may be a metal plate 21 or a wear-resistant skin bonded to the front of a continuous layer or co-planar layers of a foam material 20 backed up by a support plate 19. Each breast plate may be of segmental configuration and may be mounted between the arms extending radially from the hub to the outer ring of the frame. Cutter bit carriers are mounted on these arms, preferably being pivotally mounted thereon.
