Abstract

1419851 Hearing aid amplifiers; transistor amplifying circuits SHALAKO INTERNATIONAL Inc 23 Feb 1973 [25 Feb 1972] 9019/73 Headings H4J and H3T Apparatus for measuring hearing deficiency and/or providing compensatory amplification for a person with hearing deficiency comprises an amplification system with a number of independently adjustable active filters providing independent control of the amplification over contiguous audio frequency bands, together with an automatic gain control which reduces the gain of the input stage when the output signal exceeds a predetermined level. In use the apparatus is set up on a continuous speech signal to optimize the clarity and comprehension of the speech perceived by the person with hearing deficiency, using a relatively large master apparatus with easily set controls for the gains of the frequency bands, after which the control settings are duplicated on a wearable hearing aid. Fig. 6 shows a preferred arrangement in which signals from a microphone are fed through a microphone amplifier 50 to a drive amplifier for the variable filter 54 which comprises a number of operational amplifier filter circuits connected in parallel'each fed by respective gain control circuits, Fig. 9 (not shown). The outputs of the filter circuits are combined, at 56, and fed to the output amplifier for the receiver 60. Gain control for the f.e.t. microphone amplifier 50 can be derived either from the input to the filter circuit or the output to the receiver 60 and is effected by variation of the supply voltage of the amplifier. Circuits of the various parts of the apparatus are described with respect to Figs. 8 to 11. Each variable filter circuit can be provided at its output with a respective amplitude compression circuit (20) Fig. 5 (not shown). The filter circuits may be band stop filters arranged in series.
