Abstract

1461145 Volume and tone control MOTOROLA Inc 3 May 1974 [19 June 1973] 19572/74 Headings H4R, H4J In an arrangement for control in a multichannel amplifier by a single variable d.c voltage the signal input is applied to a current steering device controlled by the variable d.c voltage to provide selectively a feed forward for boosting an input signal or feed back for attenuating the signal as described with respect to Fig. 3 an input signal is applied to one input of a differential amplifier 30 with one output from transistor 30b, being taken to an output circuit 80 and a second output, from transistor 30a, being taken via transistor 41 and contact pad 16 to provide a high pass filtered signal for application to contact pad 13 and a low pass filtered signal to contact pad 1. The high pass filtered signal is applied to transistor 52c to control the total current flow through the differential amplifier 52, in wihch the division of current between transistors 52a and 52b is controlled by the d.c potential applied to the base of transistor 52a from the treble control 22. The two outputs from the differential amplifier 52 are taken respcctively as negative feedback to the base of transistor 30b, and as an aiding signal to the output circuit 80 so that adjustment of the current division between transistors 52a and 52b provides either treble cut, when the current flows through 52a or treble boost when the current flows through 52b, and a variation from cut to boost as the division is varied. Differential amplifier 54 is connected in parallel with the differential amplifier 52 but has no signal applied thereto and is cross connected for d.c so that d.c conditions do not vary at the outputs. In a similar way the differential amplifier 62 is connected to feed low pass filtered signals either to the output circuit 80 or back to the amplifier 30, so as to provide bass boost or cut under the control of base control 24. Volume and balance control Fig. 4 is effected by feeding each channel signal through cascaded differential amplifiers 102, 112 or 122, 132, each provided with d.c. balancing amplifiers 104, 114, 124, 134, in which the current division in the first amplifiers in the chain, i.e. 102, 122, is varied so as to differentially affect the signal gain on adjustment of balance control 28, while the current division in the second amplifiers, i.e. 112, 134, is such as to simultaneously vary the signal gain on adjustment of the volume control 26.
