Abstract

1419768 Polyurethanes IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 23 March 1973 [27 April 1972] 19559/72 Heading C3R Non-foamed polyurethanes are prepared by reacting a hydroxyl-terminated polyester and an aromatic polyisocyanate in the presence of a stannous salt of a carboxylic acid and a phenolic antioxidant which is a sterically hindered phenol having a tertiary alkyl or α-alkylcycloalkyl substituent adjacent to the phenolic hydroxyl group and which is non-discolouring in the polyurethane when the latter is exposed to U.V. light, the stannous salt and the phenolic antioxidant each being used in an amount from 0À001 to 5À0% by weight based on the weight of the polyester. In an example a mixture is prepared comprising poly(ethyleneadipate), 1,4 - butane diol, 2 - (α - methylcyclohexyl) - 4,6 - dimethyl - phenol and stannous octoate, the mixture is dissolved in dimethylformamide and then reacted with bis- (4 - isocyanatophenyl)methane. The polyurethanes so-produced have improved colour stability.
