Abstract

1458564 Polyisocyanate solutions BAYER AG 24 June 1974 [27 June 1973 26 March 1974] 27849/74 Heading C3R A process for the preparation of a physiologically harmless solution of a polyisocyanate having an isocyanurate structure, from which a two-component polyurethane lacquer with improved pot-life can be prepared, comprises reacting a solution in a lacquer solvent of a polyisocyanate having an isocyanurate structure, which solution contains free monomeric 2,4- and/or 2,6-diisocyanato-toluene which is free from isocyanurate groups, preferably in an amount of from 0À7 to 4% wt., based on the solid isocyanurate polyisocyanate, with an alcohol of the formula R-OH, preferably in a 0À1 to 10 times molar quantity based on the said diisocyanate, where R represents an aliphatic hydrocarbon group, preferably containing from 1-18 carbon atoms, which may be interrupted by ether oxygen bridges, a cycloaliphatic hydrocarbon group preferably containing 5-10 carbon atoms or an araliphatic hydrocarbon group preferably containing 7-14 carbon atoms. The solutions used are generally 10-80% wt. solutions of isocyanurate polyisocyanates obtained by partial polymerization of the NCO groups of 2,4- and optionally 2,6- diisocyanatotoluene, or by polymerization of the corresponding uretdiones. The preferred products are 10-80% wt. solutions of triisocyanato - trimethyl - triphenyl - isocyanurateisomers or their higher homologues containing more than one isocyanurate ring in ethyl acetate, and contain less than 0À7% wt. of diisocyanatotoluene, based on solid isocyanurate polyisocyanate. The isocyanurate polyisocyanate in these preferred products generally contain 8-18% wt. of isocyanate groups. In the example a 50% wt. solution of an isocyanurate polyisocyanate prepared from 3,3<SP>1</SP>-diisocyanato- 4,4<SP>1</SP>-dimethyldiphenyluretdione in anhydrous ethyl acetate by catalysis with tri-n-butylphosphine and containing 1À5% wt. free tolylene diisocyanate is reacted with either isopropanol or lauryl alcohol to produce polyisocyanate solutions containing 0À62% and 0À58% wt. respectively of free tolylene diisocyanate. The resulting solutions are diluted with ethyl acetate and made up into 2-component polyurethane lacquers with a polyester prepared from phthalic acid, adipic acid and trimethylolpropane.
