Abstract

1419651 Making bags with reinforced openings K H SENGEWALD 9 Jan 1973 1079/73 Heading B5D [Also in Division A4] A method of making carrier bags comprises providing a flattened tube of thermoplastics material with at least one longitudinally extending reinforcement strip 22, longitudinally slitting the tube walls, welding the walls together perpendicularly to the longitudinal tube axis by means of longitudinally spaced pairs of cross-welds 19, 20 and slitting the tube between and parallel to the cross-welds of each pair. The reinforcement strip(s) are welded or glued to the tube walls. In one embodiment Fig. 2 reinforcement strips, e.g. 22 are applied to opposite walls of a tube, apertures 26, 26a and gripping holes 16, 16a are punched into the strips, the strips and tube are slit longitudinally by a blade 24, the cross-welds 19, 20 are made, and bags are produced by cutting at 25 between the cross-welds. The tube may include bottom folds. In a second embodiment offset reinforcement strips are provided on opposite faces of the tube and the tube walls are cut by offset longitudinal cuts to provide bags having a reinforcement on one wall and an overlapping flap on the other. In Fig. 9 reinforcement strip is applied to one tube wall and the strip and tube slit by a blade 24. Portions 33, 34a of the tube are folded back against the adjacent wall portions and secured by welds 35, 36 and the reinforcement strips portions 23a, 23b have weakening perforations to form overlapping flaps 38. The bags have cut out gripping holes and rhomboid cutouts 37 are made to trim the overlapping flaps. In another embodiment the portions 33a, 34a are cut away as waste.
