Abstract

1419318 Earthing and testing switchgear YORKSHIRE SWITCHGEAR & ENG CO Ltd 5 March 1974 [6 March 1973] 10870/73 Heading H1N An earthing and testing-connection device for high voltage switchgear comprises a carrier 8 on which is mounted a set of extension plugs 10-12 and a set of star-connected contacts 21 which are connected to earth contacts 24, 25, the carrier having a device 29 for locking it in position on a movable housing 4 containing switching means, and a further device 28 for locking it in position on a stationary housing 1 containing bus-bar and feeder sockets 2 and 3. The extension plugs are arranged with cluster contacts 13-15 at one end for engaging a set of the sockets (e.g. the feeder sockets 6) in the stationary housing 1 and at the other end are formed with sockets 16-18 to engage with one set of supply plugs 6 on the movable switchgear housing 4. The star-connected earthing contacts are arranged to engage with the other set of supply plugs 7 on the switchgear housing. To earth the feeder circuits, the device is fitted to the movable housing as shown in Fig. 4 (and Fig. 3, not shown) and locked by movement of the handle 30 which pivots the lever 27 so that the slot 29 engages with a retaining member 29a on the housing. The movable housing is then advanced into the position shown in Fig. 4 where the extension plugs engage the feeder sockets 2, the shielding shutters being opened by operating rods 19. The earthing contact 24 engages a contact on the stationary housing, whilst contact 25 similarly makes connection to the movable housing. Earthing is effected by closing the switch to complete the circuit from the feeder sockets, via the plugs 7 and 6 and the starpoint contacts 21, to earth contacts 24 and 25. For testing the feeder circuit, the switch is opened and the movable housing is disengaged and withdrawn leaving the device supported on the stationary housing (Fig. 5, not shown) with the sockets 16-18 accessible for testing. An interlock 31 is provided to prevent insertion of the device into the stationary housing other than when it is mounted on the movable housing. The device may also be used inverted (Fig. 6, not shown) so that the extension plugs engage the bus-bar sockets 3.
