Abstract

1419136 Treating exhaust gas TENNECO INC 21 Feb 1973 [9 May 1972] 8506/73 Heading B1F A catalytic exhaust system for an I.C. engine having an exhaust manifold, said system including an exhaust gas conduit having straight sections separated by permanent bends and a plurality of porous monolithic catalyst elements in the straight sections of the conduit, the elements being spaced apart along the conduit and separated by at least one of the bends, each catalyst element being supported by resilient elements from the wall of the conduit. A V-type I.C. engine has two manifolds 3 and 5 which discharge into a pair of pipes 9 and 11 which converge at 17 into a single pipe 19. Short monolithic catalyst elements 29, 31, 33, 35, 37 and 39 are mounted in the pipes 9 and 11, each consisting of a honeycomb element coated with a reducing or oxidising catalytic material. The brittle honeycomb element is encircled by a non-metallic resilient fibrous ring 27 which is coated with a material which bonds it to the honeycomb element and to the bore of the pipe. Similar elements 41 and 43 are provided in the pipe 19. The elements may also be locked in the pipe mechanically by deforming the pipe inwardly as at 51 and 53. The locking means shown for the element 43 consists of rings 55 and 57 which fit against opposite ends of the element and are held in place by indentations 59 and 61 in the pipe wall. The locking means may be provided at the downstream end only of the elements. The elements are mounted in the pipe and the necessary bevels are made afterwards.
