Abstract

141,910. Stoney, M. P., and Flamand, P. April 29, 1919. Clutches, friction.-In Weston-type plate friction clutches, the plates are coned or dished and the clutch is operated by toggle mechanism of which the members are connected respectively to the clutch presser-plate and to a casing forming part of one of the clutch members. The driving or driven casing 5 has a conical friction surface 4 co-operating with a pressed steel or bronze ring 14 welded to a malleable-iron or cast-steel plate 13 sliding on the driven or driving shaft 1 and with plates 21, 22 sliding in the casing and also with plates 17 sliding on the plate 13, friction linings 23 being introduced. The clutch is operated by a spring-pressed sleeve 10 slidably keyed to the casing 5 and carrying links 25 operating toggle-links 27, 26 connected to the presser-plate 22 and to a stud 29 loose in a screw 30 adjustable in the casing to compensate for wear. Hardened pivot pins 28, 31, 32, 33 are used. The non-rotating operating-collar 35 carries a brake plate 40 for engagement with a plate 41 secured to the shaft 1 when the clutch is disengaged. In adapting the clutch for use with fly-wheels, the outer plates slide on bars secured in the fly-wheel web and a fly-wheel cover-plate. As shown in Fig. 4, the links 26 may be pivoted to a plate 60 adjustably screwed into the casing, the presser-plate 22<a> sliding on bars 62 projecting from the plate 60. The adjustable plate 60<a>, Fig. 5, may be engaged by the ends of bent levers 71, which carry the studs 33 on which the links 26 are pivoted. In a more compact form of the clutch, the clutch cones and the links 25 are arranged to slope in the directions opposite to those shown, and the pivot pins 32 move towards the shaft for clutch engagement.
