Abstract

1418115 Reverse osmosis MONSANTO CO 31 July 1973 [1 Aug 1972] 36284/73 Addition to 1305330 Heading B1X [Also in Division B5] A reverse osmosis membrane comprises hollow filaments of cellulose esters, e.g. cellulose acetate filaments wherein the density. gradient in the filament wall structure is characterised by haying an intrinsic permeability of at least 204 1. per sq. m. of membrane surface per 24 hours and a solids rejection of at least 90% when processing an aqueous solution containing 2000 ppm of a salt of a divalent metal at ambient temperatures and under a hydrostatic pressure of 7.03 kg/cm<SP>2</SP>, the product water being discharged at atmospheric pressure. In reverse osmosis tests, using water containing 2000 ppm of dissolved magnesium sulphate, 98% rejection is shown under the above conditions.
