Abstract
1,272,574. Cellulosic membrane; reverse osmosis. NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORP. 20 June, 1969 [3 April, 1968], No. 16087/68. Heading B1X. [Also in Division B5] A semi-permeable membrane for use in reverse osmosis processes, e.g. desalination of sea water, is made from a cellulosic ester polymer and treated with a polar compound, e.g. an alcohol, to improve the solvent flux through the membrane in use (see also Division B5). Tests with the membrane in a reverse osmosis cell, using solutions of sodium chloride, nickel chloride and nickel sulphate, show increased solvent flux (e.g. of the order of 50 gallons/day/sq. ft. at 1,000 lbs./sq. in. pressure), with slightly decreased solute rejection, especially for sodium chloride, compared with previous membranes. In use, a flat membrane may be supported on a porous stainless steel disc. A tubular membrane may be cast inside a tubular suport formed of resin-treated wound paper strips on a glass tube, and in use may be supported by tubes of resin treated paper, fibre glass, cotton or plastics, or of metal.
