Abstract

1,158,512. Desalination. ARTHUR D. LITTLE RESEARCH INSTITUTE. 1 March, 1968 [8 March, 1967], No: 11015/67. Heading B1X. [Also in Division B5] A membrane of cellulose acetate which has been prepared by casting from a mixed solution containing ZnCl 2 or LiCNS (see Division B5) is used in reverse osmosis apparatus at 600 lb/sq. in to remove NaCl from an aqueous 0.4% solution thereof. Examples show the variation in solute rejection with variations in the membrane composition, its preparing process, and its thickness. Magnesium sulphate, calcium sulphate and sugar are also mentioned as solutes.
