Abstract

1417969 Seals NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORP 4 Dec 1972 [13 Dec 1971] 57851/71 Heading F2B [Also in Division E1] Sealing means for sealing against passage of a liquid, such as a liquid thixotropic suspension between two surfaces, and suitable for use in shield-driven tunnels or shaft sinking, comprises a mount 14, Fig. 1, fixed to one of the surfaces 18 and having flexible fibres projecting brushlike therefrom, the fibres projecting at an angle other than substantially a right angle from the one surface 18. The mount 14 is welded on a strip mounting bar 10 which in turn is riveted to the tail-piece 18 of a shield, the fibres sealing the space between the tail-piece 18 and the wall 24 of the excavation. In the embodiment of Fig. 6 the mount for the fibres is clamped to the mounting bar by means of clamps 29, 42, and an inflatable bladder in the form of a tube 34 is provided to urge the fibre brush 30 into contact with a tunnel lining 33. The fibres are of a polymer, e.g. nylon, or are metallic, and may be additionally provided with a flexible sheet 37. Alternatively the seal may be formed as a sandwich 40, 41, 44 of fibres and flexible material.
