1417843 Hydraulic systems; disc brakes AUTOMOTIVE PRODUCTS Ltd 19 Oct 1973 [24 Oct 1972] 48938/72 Headings F2E and F2F A dual hydraulic brake system includes disc brakes of which the discs 1 have braking surfaces liable to axial displacement (as indicated by the dotted lines in Fig. 1) relative to fixed calipers 2 because of heat expansion of the discs 1 in service: to compensate for this any given line (e.g. 6) of the system operates brake cylinders in the calipers 2 that are affected oppositely by such displacement so that the greater travel of the piston required in one cylinder is compensated by the smaller travel required in the other. In the system illustrated, a vehicle has front discs 1 of top hat section and conventional rear drum brakes. A master cylinder 4 serves through one set of lines 6 the offside (right-hand) drum brake 3, the inner (relative to and away from the adjacent vehicle wheel) cylinder of the rearside (left-hand) disc brake and the outer cylinder of the offside disc brake; and through another set of lines 7 the nearside drum brake 3, the inner cylinder of the offside disc brake and the outer cylinder of the nearside disc brake. Other arrangements are possible on a vehicle with disc braking on more than one axle, or with two or more pairs of calipers or cylinders to a disc. For example connections may be made front to rear on a vehicle with discs all round on the same side or diagonally.
