Abstract

1417591 Earth working machines CATERPILLAR TRACTOR CO 22 March 1973 [27 March 1972] 13917/73 Heading E1F An earthworking machine (10), Fig. 1 (not shown) comprises an upper part (11) having a support 14 mounted by a bearing 13 on a mobile undercarriage (12), with a power transmission (27) carried by the upper part having a vertical shaft (29), Figs. 2, 4 (not shown) carrying a pinion (30) arranged to mesh with a ring gear 17 secured to the undercarriage, the ring gear and the pinion being disposed inside a sealed annular chamber 38. The chamber is formed by the ring gear 17 and by horizontal walls 32, 34 secured to the support 14 and the ring gear 17 respectively and vertical wall 36 carried by the wall 34 and having a seal 37 engaging the wall 32. Within the chamber 38 is an annular trough 41 which is interrupted circumferentially in the region of the pinion (30) and which is divided by radial baffles 48 into a plurality of compartments 49 communicating with the chamber 38 through ports (50). The chamber 38 and compartments 49 are charged with lubricant and because of the baffles 48 and the location of the ports 50 in the radially outer wall 42 of the trough 41 the lubricant does not all drain to one side when the machine is operating on a slope.
