Abstract

1417579 Smoke vent K G SMOKE DISPERSAL LTD 14 Jan 1974 [14 Oct 1972] 47537/72 Heading ASA [Also in Division E2] A smoke vent for a building comprises a panel 1 e.g. a glazed metal sash mounted on a metal frame 2 by hinges 3 at (or near) foot of the frame 2, spring-loaded plungers (10, 11 Fig. 3 not shown) located on the panel near the top and arranged to urge the panel 1 outwardly against the force of an electromatic lock formed by electromagnet 6 coacting with armature 9 on the panel, and a wire 15 attached to the top of the panel and the frame 1 to limit the outward movement of the panel 1 to an angle less than 90‹ on the releasing of the electromagnetic lock. The wire passes over a pulley 17 and then downwardly into a flared tube 19 which contains a helical spring 21 around the wire 15. The limit of pull through of the wire 15 into tube 19 is fixed by collar 23 which may pass through the tube itself 19 but not past the end of spring 21. The panel 1 can be closed by pulling downwardly on the wire 15 via ring 24. The electromagnet 6 may be either manually controlled or deactivated by an automatic smoke detector.
