Abstract

1417464 Polymerization vessels; catalyst inlet devices therefor SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ BV 30 May 1973 [2 June 1972] 25638/73 Heading B1F [Also in Division C3] A polymerization vessel is provided with a device for introducing catalyst into the vessel, the device comprising a first conduit, which has an exit within the vessel, and a second conduit which extends at least as far as the exit of the first conduit and which forms, with the first conduit, an annular passage surrounding the exit of the first conduit. At least part of the second conduit, which preferably extends into the vessel a distance equal to at least one inside diameter of the second conduit beyond the exit of the first conduit, may be provided with a lining of a material having a low coefficient of static friction, for example polytetrafluoroethylene, which lining may extend into the vessel beyond the exit of the second conduit. As illustrated in the Figure, the top 5 of a polymerization vessel is provided with a device comprising a first conduit 1, which is provided with a valve 2 for controlling addition of catalyst and with a side tube 3 for supply of flushing fluid, and a second conduit 4 which is provided with a side tube 6 for supply of flushing fluid through the annular passage 11 and with a polytetrafluoroethylene lining 9 having an obliquely cut end 10 which is beyond the second conduit end 8 which, in turn, is beyond the first conduit end 7.
