1416449 Laminates S O B LJUNGBO 8 Nov 1972 [8 Nov 1971] 51604/72 Heading B5N [Also in Divisions B2 and C3] A fire-resistant plastics or rubber foil ceiling or wall covering which is stretchable or shrinkable in situ has a reinforcement in the form of fibres and/or bundles of fibres not exceeding 100 mm. in length and/or stretchable fabric, which reinforcement permits the foil to be stretched or shrunk, in situ, in all directions and, in the event of fire and carbonization of the foil, forms, together with the resulting carbon, a supporting net-like structure or skin which restrains burning or smouldering foil portions from falling from the foil. The reinforcement may be incorporated when the foil is produced or may be subsequently applied to the foil in the form of an external layer, bonded by an adhesive which may be the same material as the foil. Suitable reinforcements are glass, asbestos, metal graphite, aluminium oxide, mineral wool or mixtures of these and non-combustible cellulose and wool fibres. The reinforcement may be in the form of a knitted fabric. In Example 1 a film is formed by mixing 1% glass filaments of thickness 5 Á with a 25% solution of neoprene in toluene containing a vulcanizer, stabilizer, pigment and antimony oxide and casting on a conveyer belt at 100‹ C. In Example 2 a foil of polyvinyl chloride, containing plasticizer, pigment and antimony oxide was coated with the same material containing 15% glass filaments of length 5 Á in solution in equal parts of methyl ethyl ketone and tetrahydrofuran. In Example 3 a foil as in Example 2 was lined with a layer of glass-fibre knitted fabric, adhered by an adhesive applied in spot-wise fashion or in a pattern of lines. In Example 4 a fabric of unsoftened threads of polyvinyl chloride was coated with a 20% solution of P.V.C. containing plasticizer, pigment and antimony oxide and 3% of the glass fibres of Example 1. Instead of P.V.C. threads the fabric have threads of swellable polyamide, swellable cellulose, cellulose acetate, vinylidene chloride copolymers and acrylonitrile copolymers. The foils may be of copolymers of vinyl chloride polyamides, polyurethanes, sulphochlorinated polyethylene, chlorinated rubber and mixtures of these.
