Abstract
1416442 Turbomachinery DEFENCE SECRETARY OF STATE FOR 13 March 1973 [15 March 1972] 12038/72 Heading FIT In turbomachinery, a rotor 5 is formed at its periphery with turbine blades 27 and oppositelydirected adjacent brake blades 26, a portion of inlet gas 6, e.g. compressed air, passing to the turbine blading to be cooled thereby, and the remainder passing to the brake blading to be heated thereby, and the cooled and heated streams passing to respective separate outlets 7 and 9. As shown, the inlet air passes via bores 13 and 16 into annular chambers 21, 22 separated by a diaphragm 28 defining substantially tangential oppositely inclined nozzle slots 24, 25 to the blading. The slots 25 are twice as large as the slots 24 to ensure that the turbine drives the brake. The turbine discharges directly to outlet 7, and the brake discharges into an annular exhaust manifold 8 via a chamber 12 and diffuser slots 30. The turbomachine may be used to cool mine workers, or perishable goods in transit, or to provide cooled air for gas turbine engine test work, or again to heat steel erectors' hands, de-ice aircraft controls and wings, or unblock frozen pipes or drains.
