Abstract
1416141 Electrical treatment and diagnostic apparatus P GILHEAD 1 Feb 1973 [4 Feb 1972 26 June 1972] 5302/72 and 29902/72 Headings ASK and A5R [Also in Division Gl] A device for diagnosing and/or treating human ailments comprises a casing 1 containing battery terminals, a first electrode 2 which can be moved over the patient's body, a second electrode formed by at least part of the casing or attached thereto, and current sensitive means mounted in or on the casing, connected in circuit with the supply means and electrodes, and including means for providing an indication of any relatively low resistance paths in an external circuit between the electrodes e.g. acupuncture points. The casing is held by the patient and the electrode 2 is moved over the body, the presence of any low resistance path indicating an ailment which may be treated by increasing the pressure on the body by electrode 2 to thereby increase current flow through the body. As shown, the casing is cylindrical and made of stainless steel, the electrode 2 being mounted in an insulating bushing 3 and a transparent or translucent member 4 which has a socket 14 containing a filament lamp or light emitting diode. A 9v. battery 6 is connected to the casing via an end cap 5 and to the electrode 2 and a d.c. transisterised amplifier 12, Fig. 2 (not shown), mounted on a circuit board 13, via a switching mechanism 9 operable by a lever 10 and insulating member 11. When the electrode 2 reaches a low resistance point, the lamp or diode glows brighter to provide the indication. In modifications, the circuitry can contain a potentiometer for adjusting the sensitivity, and may include an oscillator for applying an alternating current to the body. The battery 6 may be replaced by a transformer connectible to the mains. The electrodes may be made of silver or gold.
