Abstract
1416017 Merocyanine compounds LONZA Ltd 3 July 1974 [20 Aug 1973] 29464/74 Heading C4P The invention comprises compounds having the general formula wherein R 1 and R 2 are H, alkyl or aryl and R 3 , R 4 , R 5 and R 6 are H, halogen, cyano, alkyl or alkoxy. They are prepared by reacting 2-dicyanomethylene - 1,3 - indandione with an aniline compound of the general formula wherein R 1 -R 6 are as above at 40-80‹ C. to form an intermediate aminophenyl-1,3-dioxo-2- indanyl-malonic acid dinitrile from which a cyano group is split off by heating or photolysis in the form of HCN or the reaction is carried out at above 80‹ C., e.g. 100-120‹ C. to form the final product. The reaction takes place in a protic solvent. Photolysis takes place using U.V. light.
