Abstract

1415945 Halogenated diphenyl ethers BAYER AG 30 Aug 1973 [30 Aug 1972 30 March 1973] 40782/73 Heading C2C A process for the production of a halogenated diphenyl ether corresponding to the general formula in which X and Y, which may be the same or different, each represents a hydrogen atom, a halogen atom or a C 1 to C 6 alkyl radical; n is an integer of from 1 to 4; and R represents a phenyl radical unsubstituted or substituted by at least one halogen or C 1 to C 6 alkyl radical, at least one of X, Y or the substituents in R being a halogen atom, comprises reacting an alkali metal salt of a phenol corresponding to the Formula I in which X, Y and n are as defined above, with at least the stoichiometrically necessary quantity of a compound RHal, in which R is as defined above, and Hal represents a halogen atom, at a temperature of from 120‹ to 200‹ C., in the presence of copper and/or copper salt and in the presence of up to 50 mol per cent, based on the total phenol content, of a free phenol corresponding to the Formula I.
