Abstract

1414976 Halohydrins DEUTSCHE GOLDUND SILBER-SCHEIDEANSTALT 22 Nov 1972 [7 Dec 1971] 54008/72 Heading C2C Chlorohydrins or bromohydrins are prepared by reacting a non-cyclic mono-olefin optionally substituted by at least one halogen, hydroxyaryl or alkaryl group with an aqueous solution of H 2 O 2 and HCI or HBr respectively the concentration of HCl or HBr being 0À3-10% by weight. Preferably the molar ratio of H 2 O 2 to HCl or HBr is 1À0-1À2 and the concentration of hydrogen halide is 1-5% by weight in the aqueous solution. The halohydrin is advantageously continuously discharged from the reaction chamber during the reaction, e.g. by distillation, phase separation or extraction. In the examples propylene chlorohydrin, propylene bromohydrin, ethylene chlorohydrin, chloropropane diol, dichloropropanol and styrene chlorohydrin are prepared.
