Abstract
1377246 Aromatic glycidyl ethers; preparation REICHHOLD-ALBERT-CHEMIE AG 11 April 1972 [23 April 1971] 16639/72 Heading C2C [Also in Division C3] Mono- and poly-glycidyl ethers are prepared by reacting 1 mole of a polyhydric phenol with at least 3 moles of epichlorhydrin or 1 mole of a monohydric phenol with at least 1À5 moles of epichlorhydrin. In a first stage the phenol is reacted in a substantially anhydrous, non- alkaline medium until at least 90% of the hydroxyl groups are etherified by chlorohydrin groups. The mixture is then dehydrochlorinated by adding 1À0-1À2 equivalents of alkali per equivalent of phenolic OH group; during dehydrochlorination, water is azeotropically distilled and then residual epichlorhydrin is distilled off and the reaction product isolated. A catalyst, especially a quaternary ammonium salt is present during the etherification stage. Examples are choline chloride and tetramethylammonium bromide. An example of a polyhydric phenol is 4,4<SP>1</SP>-dihydroxydiphenylpropane and examples of monohydric phenols are phenol, p-tert-butyl-, tetrabromo- and o-phenyl-phenol. NaOH may be used for dehydrohalogenation and may be added as a solid or as an aqueous solution.
