Abstract

1414487 Pipette P A BETTS and K STEPHENSON 4 Jan 1973 [4 July 1972] 31127/72 Heading B1X A device for obtaining a column of liquid of predetermined length in an open-ended tube, for example in a pipette, comprises a substantially straight tube open at both ends and having a plug 13 of porous material located within its bore and spaced from both ends of the tube to form on one side of the plug a chamber for receiving the desired column of liquid and at the other side of the plug a chamber for the temporary reception of liquid drawn past the plug. In use, liquid is sucked into the tube to a level above the plug, and the liquid level is allowed to fall until the surface of the liquid is in contact with the plug, capillary action within the plug then preventing further fall of the liquid. The plug may consist of a fibrous or open-cell structure material.
