Abstract
1414342 Roller conveyers USS ENGS & CONSULTANTS Inc 20 March 1973 13376/73 Heading B8A [Also in Division B3] Idler rolls 38, 41 of a roll rack have their bearing chocks 35, 39 supported by opposite side plates 31 fixed apart by transverse base members 32 secured at one end of the plates (at the convex side of the rack), the chocks 35, 39 of each of a pair of opposite rolls 38, 41 being connected rigidly by a transverse member (plates 36 or cross-bar 40) and slidably supported by (straps 34 on) the side plates 31 for withdrawal movement of the rolls away from the base members 32 for spacing adjustment or removal of both; the transverse member 36 is anchored to the side plates 31 by disengageable locking means (a stepped key 50), the transverse member 40 of the opposite roll 41 rests against one of the base members 32 and springs 46 urge the rolls 38, 41 apart to form the passage for the continuous casting between them. Adjacent rolls 38 form a top roll-cluster 16 and adjacent rolls 41 form a bottom roll-cluster 17. The steps of the locking keys 50 are received in slots 52 in the straps 34 and the chosen steps determine the roll spacing with the aid of shims. The parallel transverse plates 36 forming the transverse member of the top roll-cluster frame are attached at their ends to blocks 37 bridging the plates. A key 50 is mounted in each block and is held in position by the pressure of the compression springs 46 housed between the plates 36 and bearing on the blocks 37 urging the rolls 38, 41 since they also bear, by way of a disc 49 and rod 48 on lugs 47 on the chocks 39 of the bottom roll 41. Some of the rolls (24) in the roll rack may be driven. The idler roll mounting can be used for a straight roll rack or a bending roll unit as well as for guide rolls of a curved rack. Openings 55, in lugs 47 and 53 in the chocks 39 and blocks 37, facilitate picking up by an extractor 30 for withdrawing and inserting sets of opposite rolls or clusters.
