Abstract

1413002 Discharging molten metal GENERAL ELECTRIC CO 2 April 1973 [3 April 1972] 15720/73 Heading F4B [Also.in Division B3] Molten metal is discharged from a furnace 12 into a mould 18 through a conduit 16 by siphonic action intiated by a vacuum source 24. The flow through the conduit 16 is controlled by an electromagnetic pump 26. If the energization of the pump 26 fails, the flow of metal is terminated by opening a valve 28 which vents the conduit 16 to atmosphere. Upon venting of the siphon molten metal downstream of the siphon apex flows into mould 18, while metal upstream of the apex flows back into the furnace 12. In a further embodiment, the flow of metal is terminated by tilting the furnace.
