Abstract
1412774 Metallurgical converters PENNSYLVANIA ENG CORP 18 July 1972 [19 July 1971] 33555/72 Heading F4B A bottom blown converter is tiltably mounted and has a circular internal cross-section with the diameter decreasing both upwardly and downwardly from the midsection, with the internal height being slightly larger than the maximum diameter preferably in a ratio of 1À1 : 1 to 1À2 : 1. Preferably a dust collection hood is provided, coupled to a duct which extends downwardly and leads to gas cleaning apparatus displaced horizontally from the converter and lying within the height confines of the converter and hood assembly. As particularly described converter 10 is mounted on trunnions 13 for tilting through 360 degrees and has an upwardly inclined pouring spout 15 and temperature measuring probe 32. It is closed by hood 16 connected to scrubber 19 while at the bottom are tuyeres 42, 43 into which project nozzles 41 supplied with a suspension of powdered additives in blast gas through a hollow trunnion shaft. The additives are entrained in the desired blast gas or gas mixture from a series of hoppers 50-55, under the control of a computer 84. In a modification permitting installation of a converter within the height confines of an existing open hearth furnace shop 100 the hood is coupled through elbow 114 to a downwardly inclined duct 118 connected to scrubber 19 through an inverted U-section conduit 115.
