Abstract

1411811 Submersible centrifugal pumps PEABODY BARNES Inc 3 Oct 1972 [9 Nov 1971] 45602/72 Heading F1C A sewage pump P can be lowered into a body of water along guide rails 22, 24 to bring a flat face of a rectangular flange 16 at the end of the pump discharge branch into engagement with a flat face 55 of a rectangular flange 44 at the lower end of a discharge pipe 12, 10. Protuberances (50), 52 on the other face of the flange 16 co-operate with inclined guide plates 46, 48 to provide a wedging action to press the flange 16 against the flange 44. The offset weight of the pump also assists in pressing the flanges together. The co-operating faces of the flanges 16, 44 are lined with stainless steel, and the protuberances (50), 52 may also be of stainless steel. The hoist cable 28 is secured to the pump at such a position that the lower edge of the plate 16 has a wiping action on the face 55 as the pump is lowered, so as to clean the face. This position is offset to one side of the centre of gravity of the pump whereby a slight rotation is given to the plate 16 as it is raised to prevent it becoming stuck. The plate 16 and protuberances (50), 52 may be replaced by a wedge-shaped plate, the inclined guide plates 46, 48 then being replaced by an apertured plate similar to the flange 44, either this plate or the flange being tapered to match the wedge-shaped plate.
