Abstract
1411544 Creating vacuum; piston discharge apparatus DUNLOP Ltd 25 Oct 1972 [30 Oct 1971] 50556/71 Headings F1N and F1R After a gas or liquid filled inflatable seal 10 has been exhausted to atmosphere by opening valves 3, 4 it is partially evacuated, evacuation being performed by closing the valve 3 and opening a valve 5, the latter causing exhaustion of a chamber 17 which allows a spring 19 to displace a piston or flexible diaphragm 13 and thus suck fluid from the seal into the opposed chamber 18. The chamber 17 is filled with pressurized fluid during inflation of the seal 10. To inflate the seal, valves 1, 2 are opened and valves 4, 5 are closed. This allows fluid from a source 11 to enter the seal and also the chamber 17 whereby to displace the piston or diaphragm against the force of the spring 19. The spring 19 may be a constant force or stiffness tension or compression spring and may be replaced by an air spring or by the flexibility of the diaphragm.
