1410712 Baggage handling system; reciprocating conveyers; platform elevators DOCUTEL CORP 16 Feb 1973 [16 Feb 1972] 7755/73 Headings B8Q B8A and B8H A baggage handling system comprises an elevated point 10 at which baggage is deposited on a weighing conveyer 24 for movement by a conveyer 26 into a cart 32 provided with guides 52, 54 to keep it correctly orientated. The cart 32 is movable alternately with a similar cart from a second point 14 by a chain drive to a transfer point 36 to which an insert 62 can be elevated by the lifting frame 142 of a vertical elevator 18. When the insert 62 is aligned with shoots 64, 66, Fig. 4, the baggage is pushed from the car 32 into the insert 62 by a pusher 72 or 110 actuated by belt drives 90, 122 driven by motors 94, 124. When loaded the insert 62 is lowered into a track vehicle 140 by which it is transported to an unloading station provided with a similar insert elevating apparatus and a similar pusher to push the baggage on to a sorting conveyer. The insert 62, Fig. 8, has a telescopic divider 178 to hold the baggage correctly orientated. When in the vehicle 140 side walls 170 thereof close the insert 62 to hold the baggage. The elevator 18, Figs. 1, 7, has a frame 142 guided by rollers 164 engaging guide rails 166 and is actuated by winch drum 152 driven by a motor 148 to haul on a cable 154 passing over pulleys 160, 158 to an attachment point on the frame 142. The insert 62 is engaged by lifting shoes 146 of the frame 142 engaging lifting bars 144 of the insert.
