Abstract

Concrete vessels.-A concrete vessel is constructed so that the skin serves merely to resist hydrostatic pressure, the shearing-stresses being borne by girders constituting the framework of the sides, the transmission of stresses of the skin being prevented by allowing small relative movement to take place between the elements of the skin and the girder. The reinforced concrete girder constituting the framework of the side comprises upper and lower chord elements 9, 7 united by inclined truss members 21. The slabs constituting the skin are preferably located with their abutting margins arranged to overlie the elements of the girder and are provided with open seams 29 leading to a calking channel 30. The bonding wires 25 connecting the slabs are connected by stirrups 26 to other stirrups 25 passing round reinforcing bars in the truss member. The bulkheads with marginal portions integral with the deck, bottom and side trusses have inner and outer marginal reinforcements with diagonal corner bonding-wires.
