Abstract

555,886. Reinforced concrete. WILLIAMS, Sir E. O. June 19, 1942, Nos. 8469 and 8957. [Class 20 (iv)] [Also in Group XXXIII] A reinforced concrete structure of the girder type such as a barge or ship is constructed so as to render vital parts of the structure proof against injuries and biplanal stresses. The concrete is cast upon a reinforcing skeleton, such as shown in Figs. 6 and 9 for a barge, composed of units 1, 6, 12, 18 consisting of upper and lower flange members such as the horizontal parts of a pressed steel joist 2 of double T section with connecting web 61, Fig. 23, which may be formed of non- uniform cross-section to facilitate binding of the concrete and may be formed with apertures 24 having flanged rims 65. The web portions of the rails 2 are also formed with apertures 3, Fig. 6 and 9, to receive the reinforcing rods 4. After the joists 2 for the bottom of the barge or ship have been set up the joists 6 for the sides 5 are secured to the joists 2 by welding, and gussets 7 and a vertical plate 8 are secured to the joists 2, 6 and further reinforcing rods 10 are placed in position. The deck structure 11, and capping plate 22, and the coaming 17 are built up in a similar manner. The concrete is now cast with the aid of moulds 51, Fig. 15, of boarding or metal secured to battens 52, 53 clamped to the joists 2 by a fixed metal clip 54 and an adjustable clip 55. The concrete is cast so that its outer surfaces are coplanar with the outer surfaces of the joists, so that the exposed metal prevents the spalling of the concrete by knocks 111. The barge, Fig. 6, is provided with a steel fender 16 and strengthening gussets 15, and it is fitted with a steering vane and bulk heads formed in the same manner as the other parts, and other parts such as the hatch covers and concrete ceiling 31 for the bottom shell 1 follow normal practice. In Fig. 11 the invention is shown applied to a double bottom ship, and the bottom shell 1 and inner shell 41 are made of concrete bound by rolled steel as described, and keelsons 44 of reinforced concrete are arranged between the shells 1, 41 to form a ballast tank 45. The rest of the ship is formed similarly of the reinforced concrete sections 5, 11, 17 with sloping shells 47, and the bulk head 25 is formed of concrete and rolled steel joists 26 spaced at the same intervals as the bottom keelsons 44 and the bulkhead is completed by reinforced concrete prepared according to normal practice or as described in connection with the other sections.
