Abstract

1410099 Shaft furnace with superheating unit ELECTRICITY COUNCIL 20 May 1974 [11 June 1973] 27642/73 Heading F4B A cupola or shaft furnace 10 with fuel fired heating means 14 and grid 17 is arranged above an inductively heated superheating unit 19 so that metal and slag from the furnace can pass through the grid into the superheating unit. The furnace may be carried on fixed supports 18 and the superheating unit may be carried on a movable trolley 22 with jacks 25, so that the unit can be raised to make a seal 28 with the furnace flange 27. Two superheating units can be employed on the same track 24, one in use while the other is under repair. A hole 32 with a charging airlock 33 is provided for adding material into the superheating unit. The furnace may have a single refractory lining 11 or a water cooled lining may be employed. The grid 17 may be cooled by circulation of a coolant which is used to preheat the blast gases entering through the wind box 15. The burner 14 may be situated below the grid 17.
