Abstract

1409662 Expansion sockets HARRIS & EDGAR Ltd 30 Oct 1972 [29 Oct 1971] 50482/71 Heading F2H An expander device for retention in a hole to retain a bolt comprises a shell of identical external members 2, 3, 4 and an internal expander member 1, the member 1 and the shell each having two axially-spaced circumferentially extending inclined surface portions 11 and 13, and 21 and 23 respectively so arranged and inclined that when the internally-threaded member 1 is engaged by the bolt and drawn through the shell both ends of the shell expand at the same rate initially by virtue of the engagement of surfaces 11 and 21 but subsequently, when surface 21 meets the more steeply inclined surface 23, the inner end of the shell expands faster than the outer end. A further inert steeply inclined circumferential surface 25 of the shell may be subsequently engaged by the member 1 to expand the outer end faster than the inner end. The members 2-4 are temporarily held together by wire circlips in grooves 26, 27 and by mating tabs 40. Rotation between the shell and the member 1 can be prevented by forming the surface portions 11 and 21 of hexagonal cross-section.
