Abstract

1409238 Drum brakes GIRLING Ltd 8 Sept 1972 [9 Sept 1971] 42018/71 Heading F2E First and second friction means are applied to at least one cylindrical surface of a rotor, the first friction means being carried by a rigid carrier adjacent the rotor and capable of movement transverse to the rotor axis but restrained against rotation around the axis, the second friction means being located on the opposite side of a diametral rotor plane normal to the rotor axis and restrained against rotation thereabout, actuation of the means being by an actuator between the carrier and the second friction means, the actuator having a housing secured directly in or to a fixed support. The carrier comprises two spaced parallel plates 3, 3<SP>1</SP> surrounding a drum 1 and carrying two shoes 7, 8 constituting the first means, pivotable in holes in the carrier. A third shoe 6 is applied by a rotating lever 10 acting through a sleeve 11 in the housing 12 and a shaft splined to the sleeve and threaded to co-operate with a sleeve 14 held in the carrier. Alternatively the lever 33 is splined directly on to the shaft and can be removed and adjusted for shoe wear. The shoes alternatively engage different diameter external drum surfaces or they engage internal surfaces. The first friction means may be a lining or linings. To provide a self-servo action of the shoe 6, the shoe is allowed peripheral movement in the carrier and rocks about one apex of a triangular plate which can rock about either of two bolts 4 adjacent the other apices. To aid assembly of the splined sleeve 11-shaft arrangement, a plate, seen next to the sleeve 14, engages at least one spline of the shaft to prevent its rotation or loss, by means of teeth, a coiled spring or a spring tooth. Upon introduction of the sleeve 11, the plate is pushed into its illustrated position.
