Abstract

1,202,904. Disc brakes. NORTON VILLIERS Ltd. 28 Aug., 1968 [31 Aug., 1967; 3 May, 1968], Nos. 39789/67 and 20998/68. Heading F2E. A brake and wheel assembly comprises a road wheel rotatably mounted on a mounting and a calliper fixed to the mounting and having spaced limbs with friction means mounted thereon to engage oppositely-facing annular surfaces of an annular disc element drivingly connected to the wheel, the driving connection between the wheel and the disc element being constituted solely by engagement between driving surfaces on either the inner or outer peripheral edge of the disc element and complementary driving surfaces on the wheel, there being no constraints on the disc element in directions radial of the rotary axis of the wheel between the peripheral edges of the disc. Fig. 2 shows the invention applied to a motor cycle front wheel 12 rotatable about a spindle 10 which is carried in spring legs 11, parts 10 and 11 constituting the mounting above referred to. A disc element in the form of a single disc 23 has a splined connection 24 at its inner periphery with a cylindrical spigot 21 on the hub, and is retained by a plate 25 but is free to move slightly in an axial direction. Radially it is unconstrained and it is straddled by a spottype calliper. In Figs. 3 and 4 the disc element consists of two discs 30, 31, each having three arcuate recesses such as 39 at its inner periphery and three arcuate splined portions such as 37 alternated therewith. The discs are interfitted as shown, and mutually separated by ribs 41, 42 to provide cooling passages 43. In Figs. 5 and 6 (not shown), the discs are internally-toothed annuli of uniform width, and are of uniform thickness except for U-shaped depressions in their meeting faces which conjointly provide cooling passages; each cooling passage communicates with the exterior by aligned holes in the two discs. In general (not as particularly described), the disc element may be mounted without any end float and used with two movable friction pads; as described, the calliper has one fixed and one movable pad.
