Abstract

1409068 Laminating backings to tufted fabrics SYNTHETIC FABRICS (SCOTLAND) Ltd 25 July 1973 [27 July 1972 25 May 1973] 35059/72 and 25283/73 Heading B5N [Also in Division D1] A secondary backing is bonded to a tufted primary backing, whose tufts have not yet been fixed in position by a bonding agent, by superposing the layers, applying to the secondary backing an aqueous latex foam of a flexible film-forming polymer, substantially collapsing the foam without suction so that the latex penetrates the secondary backing and encapsulates the yarns thereof, and drying at elevated temperature. The secondary backing is preferably a woven or knitted polypropylene fabric (suitable constructions being specified) which has been stretched and heat-set. The tufted primary backing may comprise a woven polypropylene fabric tufted with polyamide yarn. The latex may be a mechanically or chemically foamed filled carboxylated styrene-butadiene elastomer latex and may be collapsed by heat or by nip rollers; sufficient heat may be supplied during drying. The collapsed foam may retain some air bubbles. Drying may take place in a hot air oven. During processing, the fabrics may be supported by stenter clips.
