Abstract

1408938 Roll-handling apparatus; winding webs HARRIS CORP 16 Oct 1972 [22 Nov 1971] 47558/72 Headings B8H and B8R Roll handling apparatus for lifting a roll A of paper or webbed material from the ground and holding the same during winding or unwinding and then depositing the roll on the ground comprises a wheeled vehicle having a rear position 12 which is wider than a portion 14 extending therefrom such that the apparatus is L-shaped when viewed from above, roll support arms 26, 30 being mounted on a shaft 24 which extends along the portion 14 and which is rotatable about its own axis, thus providing for the rotation of the arms 26, 30 to either side of the vehicle, the position of the arm 30 being movable along the shaft 24 by means of a leadscrew shaft 38 which is received in a journal 36 on the arm 30 and is rotatable by means of an hydraulic motor 42 such that the arms 26, 30 can handle rolls of different size. Rotation of the shaft 24 is effected by means of first and second hydraulic rams 50, 58, Fig. 5, which are housed in the rear portion 12 and which are respectively coupled to ears 54, 62 fixedly secured to the shaft 24 which is rotatably supported in bearings 46, 48. The drive for the roll handling is provided by an hydraulic motor (125) which is coupled to the rear wheels 18 of the vehicle, Fig. 2 (not shown), and the motors 42 and (125) are controlled by means of solenoidoperated valves (128, 118) while the rams 50, 58 are controlled by a solenoid-operated valve (100), the valves (100, 118, 128) being part of an hydraulic circuit, Fig. 9 (not shown), which is located in a control unit 20 on the vehicle, the valves (100, 118, 128) being in communication with an hydraulic oil supply tank (82) by means of supply (90) and return (92) conduits. The arms 26, 30 engage with the core C of the roll A by means of respective chucks 28, 32, each of which is mounted on a spindle having a tension brake 27, 31. The vehicle is provided with front wheels 16 which, together with the rear wheels 18, run in tracks 70 (72, 74), Fig. 2 (not shown)
