Abstract
1408689 Boring earth etc; diving bells A P PEDRICK 18 Dec 1973 58634/73 Headings E1F and E1H [Also in Division B7] Two side-by-side hulls (only one of which is visible in Fig. 2) are linked by a super structure 13 and have mounted in the space between them a tubular structure-as shown comprising telescopic sections 6, 7, 8. This tubular structure terminates in a diving bell 9 with which are associated hollow floats which can be flooded to sink the structure at will. During transit, the floats are made buoyant and the tubular structure trails in a substantially horizontal orientation. To observe, or more particularly to drill, the sea bed, the floats are flooded, the structure becomes vertical and the bell is sealed to the sea bed. A drill string 8 can then be fed down the structure and rotated by a submerged motor 25 and associated gearing 24.
