Abstract

1,086,881. Boring earth; wells. CHEVRON RESEARCH CO. March 31, 1965 [April 1. 1964], No. 13770'65. Heading E1F. During drilling, or working on, an underwater well from a floating vessel 1 through a marine conductor 15 the buckling of the conductoir due to the material contained therein is prevented by applying a tension to the conductor in addition to any tension which may be applied to prevent buckling of the conductor for other reasons such as displacement of the vessel, movement of the water, or weight and loading of the conductor. The tension to compensate for the weight of the material contained 'in the conductor is equal to the weight in water of the material which may be drilling fluid with, or without, drill pipe or casing. The top of the conductor is supported laterally in the shaft 3 of the vessel and has a part 54 biassed into contact with the vessel. Below the part 54 the conductor has a flexible joint 49 which is above a telescopic joint 50. The lower end of the conductor has a ball joint 48 and is connected to the wellhead 20, which includes blowout preventers 22, 23 and a connector 24 by means of a connector 45. The total tension may be applied through cables each connected at one end to the conductor and at the other end to either a constant tension winch on the vessel or to weights suspended over pulleys on the vessel. As shown the total tension is applied by a float 90 which may be supplemented by a second float, but in modifications the buoyancy of the float is supplemented or replaced by forming the conductor with a double wall. The tension may be reacted by the connection of the wellhead to the bed 11 or it may be wholly or partly reacted by a ring 110 connected to the conductor to be level with the ball joint.
