Abstract

1408368 Polymers of phospholene oxides MONSANTO CO 16 July 1973 [17 July 1972 (2)] 33787/73 Headings C3P and C3R [Also in Division C2] A polymer of a phospholene oxide comprising units having the formula or mixtures thereof, in which R is a C 1 -C 20 substituted or unsubstituted hydrocarbyl radical, and R<SP>1</SP>, R<SP>11</SP>, R<SP>111</SP> and R<SP>1111</SP> are the same or different and are hydrogen, or halogen atoms or substituted or unsubstituted C 1 -C 20 hydrocarbyl radicals, and the polymer has a molecular weight of from 200 to 1 million may be prepared by contacting a phospholene oxide having the formula or a mixture thereof, with an anionic polymerization catalyst, and recovering the polymer. In the examples 1-methyl-3-phospholene- 1-oxide, 1-phenyl-2-phospholene-1-oxide, 1,3- dimethyl - 3 - phospholene - 1 - oxide, 3 - methyl- 1 - phenyl - 2 - phospholene - 1 - oxide, 1 - nhexyl - 3 - phospholene - 1 - oxide, 1 - n - octyl- 3 - phospholene - 1 - oxide, 1 - n - decyl - 3- phospholene - 1 - oxide, 1 - n - dodecyl - 3- phospholene - 1 - oxide, 1 - α - naphthyl - 2- phospholene - 1 - oxide, 1 - ethyl. - 3 - phospholene - 1 - oxide, 1,3,4 - trimethyl - 3 - phospholene-1-oxide, acrylonitrile and vinyl chloride are polymerized in the presence of tetrahydrofuran and t-butyl magnesium chloride. The polymers may be incorporated as fire retardant and anti-static additives into polyethylene terephthalate, nylon 6,6, polyacrylonitrile, polyvinyl chloride and polystyrene.
