Abstract
1,255,596. Imidized maleic anhydride copolymers. FARBENFABRIKEN BAYER A.G. 27 Jan., 1970 [31 Jan., 1969], No. 3854/70. Headings C3C and C3P. A thermoplastic moulding compound is prepared by the partial imidization of a copolymer of maleic anhydride and an unsaturated hydrocarbon having a substantially alternating structure by reacting from 5 to 95% of the anhydride groups with ammonia and/or a primary monoamine which contains from 1 to 8 carbon atoms so as to form the corresponding cyclic imide groups. In the examples copolymers of isobutylene or ethylene and maleic anhydride are treated with methylamine, ethylamine, cyclohexylamine or ammonia, the copolymer being suspended in benzene or dimethylformamide or dissolved in water. The copolymers may be prepared using azodiisobutyronitrile in benzene or methylene chloride solution. In Examples 7 and 8 foamed products are prepared using azodicarbonamide.
