Abstract
1407418 Copolymerization of mono-olefins and conjugated diolefins SNAMPROGETTI SpA 24 Nov 1972 [26 Nov 1971] 54527/72 Heading C3P One or more mono-olefins are copolymerized with one or more conjugated diolefins in the presence of a catalyst system comprising (a) a compound AlR 3 or AlR 2 X where X is halogen and R is a C 1 -C 10 hydrocarbon radical and (b) a compound different from compound (a) and having the formula X n MY m where M is Zn, Hg, B, Al, Si, Ge, Sn, Pb, As, Sb, Ti, Bi, Zr, Mo or W, X is halogen and Y is O, S, H or an organic group, n and m being positive integers whose sum is the valency of M except when Y is O or S when 2m + n is the valency of M. Y may be an ester, amine, phosphine, #-dicarbonyl, alkoxy, (cyclo)alkyl or aryl group. The mono-olefin may be isobutene, methylbutene or methylpentene and the diolefin may be butadiene, isoprene or 2,3-dimethylbutadiene. In the examples isobutene and isoprene are copolymerized in methyl chloride or pentane using a catalyst in which (a) is AlEt 2 Cl, AlEt 2 Br, AlEt 2 I or AlEt 2 F and (b) is T 1 (OnBu)Cl 3 , SiCH 3 Cl, Sn(C 2 H 5 ) 3 Cl, SnEtCl 3 , SiHCl 3 , Sn- (CH 3 ) 2 Cl 2 , Sn(C 6 H 5 ) 3 Cl, T 1 (acetate) 2 Cl 2 or Sn- (acetate) 2 Cl 2 and the polymerization is terminated by the addition of methanol. The product copolymer is vulcanized. In comparative examples SnEt 4 is used as (b) and some the (b) components are used alone. The Specification refers to 1,407,415, 1,407,417, 1,407,419 and 1,407,420.
