Abstract

Conjugated diene polymers having a reduced tendency to cold flow in the unvulcanized state are prepared by polymerizing a conjugated diene with a catalyst comprising an organo-metallic compound in the presence of a compound R4M where M is silicon, germanium, tin or lead and R is a vinyl, alkyl, cycloalkyl or aryl radical, at least two of said radicals being vinyl. The compound R4M is incorporated in the polymerization mixture at any time prior to shortstopping the polymerization reaction, and the amount of said compound added is generally from 0.005 to 5 millimoles per 100 parts by weight of monomer. The preferred catalysts are selected from (a) an organometallic compound and an iodine-containing component and (b) an organo-lithium compound. Extensive lists of monomers, comonomers, catalyst components and compounds R4M are given. In the examples butadiene is polymerized in a solvent using one of the following catalyst systems:-(a) n-butyllithium and tetravinyl silane or tetravinyl tin; (b) lithium methylnaphthalene and tetravinyl tin and (c) triisobutylaluminium, titanium tetrachloride, iodine or titanium tetraiodide, and tetravinyl tin. The polymers may be vulcanized.
