Abstract

1406723 Thermoplastic moulding materials G U U LUNDBERG 3 Dec 1973 [5 Dec 1972] 55880/73 Headings C3P C3Q and C3R [Also in Division B5] Thermoplastic materials, suitable for use as modelling materials or as medical casts or rigid dressings, which are plastically mouldable above a first, moulding temperature and shape-stable below a second temperature, the difference between the two temperatures not exceeding 25‹ C., comprise (1) a high polymer having a glass transition temperature at or below the moulding temperature and a softening temperature range located above the moulding temperature, (2) an additive substance having a melting temperature range, within which lies the moulding temperature, mixed with or dissolved in said high polymer and (3) a reinforcing agent, the materials being capable of hand manipulation at the moulding temperature but being shapestable at normal room and as appropriate at use, e.g. body, temperature. The preferred additive is a mixture of polyethylene glycol and paraffin wax, and the preferred reinforcements are fibres, grains, particles or foils, e.g. cellulose fibres. Examples describe compositions comprising (1) ethylene/vinyl acetate copolymer, (2) ethylene/vinyl acetate copolymer and polyethylene oxide, (3) natural rubber, (4) styrene/ butadiene rubber and (5) polyethylene oxide, together with polyethylene glycol, paraffin wax and cellulose fibres, the composition (1) being additionally bonded under heat and pressure to a woven cotton reinforcement.
