Abstract

A surgical dressing has secured therein elemental iron or a compound thereof to which an electro-magnetic field is sensitive, the iron or compound thereof being embedded in an elastomer. The iron compound may be ferric oxide, ferrosoferric oxide or another iron oxide; the elastomer may be polyisobutylene, a copolymer of vinyl acetate and vinyl chloride, or a plasticised polyvinyl chloride. The iron or compound thereof may constitute from 20% to 90% by weight of the combined elastomer and iron or compound thereof. The elastomer with the iron or compound thereof embedded therein may be in the form of one or more filaments, strips and/or films, which structures may be secured into the dressing, for example a gauze-pad comprising from 8 to 16 layers of cotton gauze, by stitching, heat-sealing or solvent-sealing. The dressing may comprise, in addition to the iron or compound thereof, one or more components opaque to X-rays, for example those components described in Specifications 640,541, 716,923 and 795,870.
