A surgical dressing comprises a plurality of layers of an absorbent non-woven textile fabric contained in a textile fabric envelope, the dressing being rendered X-ray detectable. The dressing may be rendered X-ray detectable by impregnation with an X-ray opaque substance or by incorporating a detectable member, suitably attached to the inner wall of the envelope or to at least one layer of the non-woven fabric. The envelope may be woven or non- woven. The dressing may be sterilized by ethylene oxide or gamma rays. Suitable non-woven fabrics include those obtained by rearranging a bed of fibres into a mechanically interlocked fabric by passage of fluid through the bed. In the Example the X-ray detectable member comprises BaSO 4 embedded in polyvinyl chloride.
