Abstract

1356651 Fabrics &c KNITMESH LTD 14 July 1972 [17 April 1971] 9733/71 Heading D1K [Also in Division B1] A packing element for fluid contacting apparatus comprises an elongate, strip-like body of knitted or woven filamentary material wound or folded about an axis transverse to the length of the body so that areas of the body are in overlapping relation with one another, the body being formed so that the density of filamentary material in the body is greater at one marginal edge thereof than at the opposite marginal edge. The element may be formed from a tube 24, Fig. 2 with diametrically opposed areas of increased density 26, the tube being flattened and folded 'to form the element, Fig. 4 which can be further folded or rolled about an axis transverse to the first fold, Figs. 5 and 6. The areas of increased density are provided by increasing the number of stitches in the knitting operation or the number of filaments used as warp and weft per unit area.
