Abstract

1478454 Surgical swabs JOHNSON & JOHNSON 28 Aug 1974 [31 May 1973] 25905/73 Heading ASR [Also in Divisions B5 and Dl] A surgical swab 1, which has been cut from a length of knitted fabric, has the or each cut edge thereof enclosed within a folded tape 5, 6, each tape being folded over the respective cut edge with the side edges of said tape tucked in, and the tape being secured to the cut edge of the swab. A portion 8 of tape 5 is extended beyond the width of the swab. An X-ray detectable ribbon 7 is incorporated in the swab. The fabric may be hydrophilic cotton or staple spun or continuous filament viscose rayon and may include polyester yarns, the fabric being warp or weft knitted. The tape may be woven, bias-cut or non-woven and secured to the cut edge of the swab by stitching.- A tape having a thermoplastics material on its inner surface may be secured to the swab by radio-frequency welding. A yarn containing barium sulphate or stainless steel wires may provide for X-ray detectability. Alternatively, a tuned circuit or a magnetic material may be incorporated in the swab. The swab may be sterilized and packaged in a sterile enclosure.
